How should I care for my container plants over winter?

If the containers are large and made from winter friendly material (something that will not break if frozen/thawed) it is fine to leave your plants in containers outside for overwintering. You can cover with a layer of leaves or other natural mulch for extra protection. You can also move the pots right next to the walls of your home or into an unheated garage or shed.  Be sure to check moisture levels even in winter for container plants. Once it gets to early spring, uncover the mulch and/or move them outside so the plants can emerge.  More tips for overwintering native plants can be found here
